Why MMA

Complete
Development

01
🥋
Ground Mastery

BJJ-based grappling forms the foundation of the MMA program. You'll develop submission offense, defensive wrestling, and the positional control to finish or survive on the ground.

02
🤼
Takedown Offense

Wrestling is East LA's signature. The MMA program features dedicated takedown work that integrates cleanly with the BJJ game — making our students formidable from range to the mat.

03
👊
Striking Integration

Boxing and Muay Thai fundamentals are trained in the context of MMA — not as standalone arts, but as tools that work with the grappling game for a complete skill set.

04
🧭
Fight IQ

Understanding distance management, transitions between ranges, and reading an opponent is the highest-level skill in MMA. We develop it systematically through sparring and study.

05
🔥
Extreme Fitness

MMA training produces elite-level conditioning. Rounds are intense, full-body, and functionally athletic. You'll reach levels of fitness you didn't know were possible.

06
🏟
Competition Path

For those who want to compete — amateur or professional — we build structured pathways. Our coaches have trained fighters who have competed at regional and national levels.

The System

How We
Train

MMA at East LA is built on the Renzo Gracie system — BJJ as the base, wrestling for transitions, and striking as the tool that sets everything else up.

Questions

Common
Questions

Do I need BJJ experience to join MMA?+
A foundation in BJJ is strongly recommended before joining MMA classes. We suggest at least 3–6 months of BJJ training first so that the ground game concepts are familiar. This makes MMA training significantly safer and more productive.
Is this for people who want to compete in MMA?+
The program serves both competitors and serious recreational students. You don't have to want to fight professionally — many students train MMA because it's the most complete martial arts challenge. That said, for those who do want to compete, we have a structured pathway and coaching support.
What gear do I need?+
For MMA classes you'll need MMA gloves, rash guard or shorts, and a mouthguard at minimum. For sparring rounds, shin guards, headgear, and a cup (for men) are required. We can advise on specific brands and budget options when you come in for your first class.
How safe is the sparring?+
Safety is non-negotiable. All sparring is supervised by coaches, escalation levels are clearly defined and respected, and we do not tolerate reckless behavior. We have experienced practitioners who have never had a serious injury because the culture of safety is embedded in every round we do.

"I had zero fighting experience when I started. Six months in I did my first amateur MMA fight and won. The preparation I received was as good as any team I've seen."

"The wrestling component is what sets East LA apart. I've trained at other gyms and nowhere else develops your wrestling game as systematically as they do here."
